Money makes the world go around

It’s certainly interesting to see the latest median wage results on news.com.au. Males in the workforce earn an average of $60,954 and the average female wage is $50,996.

What is actually happening is that skilled sectors are being in more demand and therefore driving up the average wage of the overall workforce.

I guess this explains why im not earning the ‘average’ wage. Perhaps my job isn’t skilled enough?

What am I doing wrong?

Well here’s your answer.

By taking the actual numbers into account on face value can be misleading. While the mining sectors boom with some workers taking home $100,000 per annum for driving a truck, there are others in sectors such as hairdressing or child care that pays very little in comparison. So whilst there may be less people getting the top dollars, the industry boom actually ‘skews’ the figures.

A hundred thousand per year for driving a truck? I know people that do it. These people are earning more than dentists and doctors, nurses and teachers (whom we leave to educate our kids). I think it is ridiculous. I know it takes skill to drive one of those mammoth of a things, but the money they are on it makes you think about the people who are in other sectors whom had to do years of sacrifice and study to get where they are. I just don’t think its justice.

Other sectors that are going well are:

1. Engineering
2. IT jobs
3. Specialised Trades such as Plumbing and Electrical
4. Lawyers

Take out the mining sector and let’s see what the average wage is.

I would take a guess of around $45,000?
